General Summary:

The Director, Data Engineering directs all organization-wide data operations, engineering, analysis and architecture management related activities for the organization. This individual is responsible for maintaining quality and protection of sensitive data and information assets. To perform this job successfully this individual must be self-motivated and able to work with a team of Data Architects, Engineers, Business Analysts, and Coordinators. This position will also need to work very closely with the Enterprise Data Management team to ensure the reference architecture, data requirements, and time frames are in alignment with the expected output and corresponding and iterative design that meets our business challenges. We are looking for someone with proven experience and examples of how they led the design of a system with multiple applications and data models across an enterprise and found qualitative and quantitative success.

Essential Job Function:

1.       Oversee and direct the strategic planning of Data Engineering Operations:

•         Ability to support major initiatives underway transforming our back-office financial services/data to a centralized and progressive platform.

•         Gather business requirements, working closely with Global team, business users, engineers, project team, and developers.

•         Analysis of business requirements and design of conceptual, logical, and physical data models

•         Develop reference data architectures, including working with EDM on enterprise standards, principles, patterns, and dictionary.

•         Develop recommendations for internal leadership around preferred data integration methodologies.

•         Communicate clearly with internal business customers

•         Provide technical direction on the design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of data warehouse solutions; as well as identification and resolution of data quality issues.

•         Provide standards and governance to agreed-upon standards (i.e. leads audit checks to ensure standards are being followed.)

•         Partner with IT Strategy on implementation of Data Engineering & Services implementation that will future-proof the organization’s needs and prepare IT to work on innovation treks more confidently (i.e. Big Data, Machine Learning, AI, etc.)

•         Execute strategies that inform data design and architecture.


2.       Manage Relationships with Stakeholders

•         Work directly with the stakeholders to establish technology plans to support business models

•         Identify opportunities for business process and technology improvement across departments that support plans and initiatives.

•         Advise clients on available technology and solutions.

•         Proactively advocate how technology can be best used to further the business goals

•         Participate in IT steering committees, budget committees and management meetings

•         Provide executive level reporting for project statuses, budget

•         Prioritize and coordinate requests from clients and work closely with the rest of the IT department to coordinate the implementation of solutions to satisfy requests.


3.       Personnel Management

•         Provide Leadership and supervision - Mentor and train team members on current technologies and data engineering best practices

•         Staff recruitment 

•         Prepare and conduct employee’s performance appraisal

•         Manage contractors and consultants


4.       Budget Management

•         Work closely with IT Budget Control team to plan and manage budget for Function cost center projects, maintenance, and resources

•         Prepare and manage project and IT service contracts

•         Prepare and publish routine performance reports


5.       Delivery Support

•         Serve as leader on various projects and technology initiatives

•         Collaborate on strategic planning, major initiatives, and directives

•         Develop, review, and oversee Function goals, objectives, policies, and procedures

•         Periodically review policies and practices relating to system performance and service level agreements (system backups, disaster recovery, audits)

•         Work closely with other departments with organization, along with partners & HQ as required


Knowledge and Skills:


•         Ability to analyze and develop Project Proposals, Current/Future Processes, Operational Business Requirements, User Acceptance Test Plans, Project Implementation, and Evaluation Documents

•         Strong oral/written negotiation and communication skills

•         Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

•         Strong skills in Microsoft Office including MS Visio and MS Projects

•         Process modeling experience – highly desired

Education and Experience:


•         12 years of IT management/application experience, with 5 years’ experience in a data engineering role

•         Minimum of 5 years’ experience coordination and supporting IT business & data processes

•         Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, or related field desired

•         Finance Industry, or Captive Automotive Finance industry experience – a plus



Physical Requirements and Working Condition:


Employees in this class are subject to extended periods of sitting, standing and walking, vision to monitor and moderate noise levels. Work is performed in an office environment.

May require travel up to an average of few trips per year including international.
